The past two days are special for the 7.23 million examinees and their parents. It is the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao in Chinese). Based on the current education system in China, the result of the two day exam greatly impacts the future of any students in China. The score will decide whether you can receive college education. For most places in China, only half of the students are eligible for college education (only 3.40 million will be admitted to colleges in 20__) and the rest has to start work after high-school. In cities like Beijing and Shanghai, students are lucky enough to have a much higher ratio (more than 70%) to enter colleges.
Tsinghua, Peking University, Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are among the first class in China. But only very few people can go there.
To enter a college or not, or to enter a good college or not directly impact the first offer they can get after graduate and impact their career. So it is the most critical time for students.
Isaac recorded the "No Honking During Gaokao" sign. I saw the same sign near Henan Rd. and Zhaojiabang Rd.. Not only honking is not allowed. All construction sites around schools were ordered to work in limited time in the recent 10 days. My name is Dongqi Yang from china, I am horror to be here today and I am very happy to receive this award. As you can imagine, as international students in Australia, the biggest challenge is English, I remembered that when I come here first time, there is a party in the house of my home stay. During the time, they played jokes and they laughed all the time, do you know how embarrassed that is, everyone laughed except you. So I pretend to understand the joke in another party, I saw everyone laugh and I laugh too in 5 seconds later. My home stay was surprised about that and asked me “do you understand?”， and I answered “no”， “So why do you laugh?” ”because I do not want to be embarrassed”!
But as I receive this award today, I want to thank to them, because they encourage me to be involved with the committee rather than staying in at home, play computer and speak Chinese. When I came to Wantirna College first time, I met liz collar who is international student coordinator. She is very kind to me, and she encourage me join SRC, I went to SRC meetings regularly all the time, but I didn’t even know what SRC was! That is the reason why I told her, I don’t want to go to SRC anymore. But she said “why not? You should go and you have to go!”I asked” why?” she said:” because I said so!”
But as ii receive this award today, I want to thank her. She helps me a lot. Truth be told, I am not the best student in Wantirna College, but I appreciate this award and I will try my best in future. I think I got 10 seconds left, I want to thank to Les and Vera who is my lovely home stay, thanks to Liz collar who is international student coordinator, I strongly want to thank to my mother, because she support me and gave me the opportunity to come to Australia. Good afternoon, everyone. It’s my great honor to stand here and give you a short speech. My topic is “Never give up”. Now let’s begin.
Have you seen a film named Titanic, I believe no one will shake head. It’s a film about how the ship Titanic sank into the sea in that time. It is very exciting. But I am quite interested in the story of the film, Jack and Rose’s story. I can learn some deeper things from it.
After the ship hit an iceberg and sank into the sea. Jack and Rose and other people fell into the cold sea water. As the weather was getting colder and colder, they were gradually stepping into death. Jack asked Rose to promise him not to give up the hope of life. At last, Jack was dead, and Rose had a narrow escape, because she listened to Jack and didn’t give up.
As for us, we will never be in the sank Titanic and do not insist on waiting for the rescue of others, but, in reality, never give up is still necessary and much more important.
In the race of life, there is no doubt that we will go through ups and downs, peaks and valleys, and joys and sorrows.
